Tatkal booking tips and common waitlist questions
Understand the Tatkal quota, when its booking window opens, and how to think about RAC and waiting-list tickets — with practical, honest guidance and no fabricated confirmation odds.

Tatkal is a premium same-journey quota opened one day before departure for urgent travel, at a higher fare. It exists for people who could not plan far ahead, and because the window is short and demand is high, a little preparation goes a long way.
Before the window opens
- Know your train number, boarding and destination codes, and preferred class in advance.
- Keep passenger details and a valid ID ready so you are not typing them under time pressure.
- Decide your acceptable alternatives — a different class or a nearby train — before you start.
Because Tatkal opens one day before departure, being ready the moment the window starts matters far more than any trick. Treat it as a short, well-rehearsed routine rather than a scramble.
If you end up on RAC or a waiting list
Not every booking confirms immediately. Two outcomes are common, and it helps to know what each means for your travel plans.
- RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) lets you board with shared seating, and it often becomes a full berth as cancellations come in.
- WL (Waiting List) means you are waitlisted; it may confirm as others cancel, but on some quotas a ticket that stays waitlisted is auto-cancelled before departure.
We won't quote confirmation odds for your specific ticket, because honest numbers depend on the quota, cancellations, and how far up the list you are. Instead, keep checking your status as departure approaches.
The most reliable way to track a Tatkal or waitlisted booking is to check your PNR status.
On the day you travel
Once the chart is prepared a few hours before departure, your status is largely settled. If you are confirmed, switch your attention to the train itself: knowing whether it is on time tells you when to leave for the station.
