How to check if your train is cancelled or running today
Worried your train might be cancelled? Here's how to check whether an Indian train is running today, what a 'not started' or 'does not run today' status means, and how to find out when the train actually operates.

A cancelled or rescheduled train can upend a whole day of travel, so before you leave for the station it is worth confirming your train is actually running today. The quickest check is the live running status: enter the train number, pick today as the journey start date, and read what the status tells you.
Start by opening the running status tool.
What the status tells you
When you check a train for today, the result falls into one of a few clear cases. Reading them correctly saves a wasted trip to the platform.
- Running: the train is on the move. You will see its current station, delay, and a stop-by-stop timeline — it is operating today.
- Not started: the train runs today but has not yet left its origin. There is no live position until it departs; the schedule tells you the departure time.
- Does not run today / status unavailable: the train is not scheduled on this day. The page then shows the days of the week the train actually runs so you can plan for the right day.
- Cancelled: when the data source reports a cancellation, the status reflects it rather than showing a live position.
Why 'not started' is not the same as 'cancelled'
It is easy to see an empty live position early in the day and assume a train is cancelled. Usually it simply has not departed yet, or it does not run on that weekday. The status labels these cases separately so you are never left guessing — a train that genuinely does not operate today is called out clearly, along with the days it does run.
If the train does not run today, check the days it operates and look again on the correct day, or choose a different train for your route.
If you need an alternative, you can find other trains between your stations.
A note on cancellation lists
Indian Railways cancels or reschedules trains day to day for weather, maintenance, and operational reasons, and the authoritative list is the railways' own enquiry service. Rather than publish a list that could go stale within hours, we show the live status for the exact train you ask about — which reflects a cancellation when the data source reports one. Always treat the official Indian Railways enquiry as the final word before you travel.
